My Digital Detox

The sigh of crackberry relief!

The sigh of crackberry relief!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to notice that many of us are constantly connected. Even on the weekends, time off becomes time on. Recently, I took a little staycation. What’s that you may ask? Well in these tough economic times, it’s basically a vacation that you take at home or somewhere close to home.

I took the second option and headed from my east-side hood to The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica for a long weekend. Ok, not really a far break from reality but the hotel is having a fun promotion where they’re urging guests to take a “retweet” or “digital detox”. The cute art-deco hotel is right on the beach, which was definitely a nice change from the 7-eleven view from my apartment.

Here’s how it went down:
1) When I arrived, they asked politely for my blackberry, which they would keep locked up during my stay. (So I failed this step, but I knew I just needed it for basic communication with friends stopping by and trusted that I wouldn’t overuse it.)
2) They gave me fun offline activities- Mad libs book, tickets to pier rides. (Passed! Played mad libs with friends that night. Forgot how much I loved that game.)
3) Nothing escapes the internet, and as you can see I was guilty of tweeting over my 2 day detox (Sorry!)

So while we all complain about constantly being connected, maybe disconnecting isn’t as easy as we think. Nonetheless, I challenge you all (and myself) to a little digital detox this summer. Take that break, THEN be sure to tweet & blog it up (haha!). While the interwebs are running at the speed of light, you might just realize that nothing really changed that much while you were gone.
